Federation of Canadian Municipalities

GoogleStory

FCM has been the national voice of municipal government since 1901. Our members include more than 2,000 municipalities of all sizes, from Canada's cities and rural communities to northern communities and 20 provincial and territorial municipal associations. Together, they represent more than 90 percent of all Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Municipal leaders from across Canada assemble each year to set FCM policy on key issues.

Canadian municipalities came together in 1901 as the Union of Canadian Municipalities (UCM). The Dominion Conference of Mayors was established in 1935 and by 1937 the two national bodies joined as the Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities—renamed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in 1976.

Today, we advocate for municipalities to be sure their citizens' needs are reflected in federal policies and programs. Year after year, our work benefits every municipal government and taxpayer in Canada, and our programming delivers tools that help municipalities tackle local challenges.

What issue was FCM looking to solve?

FCM wanted to help their employees in multiple areas: being overwhelmed with the workload and help with prioritizing, tracking and reporting on their work. Overall, FCM was seeing operational pressures that made their people feel like firefighters constantly putting out fires, working in a reactive manner. The goal was to move to a more proactive state to better manage the workload and increase productivity and efficiency.

The Priority Management Solution

Priority offered FCM our WorkingSmart method to learn how best to manage their everyday workload. We wanted to help them tackle the main issues they faced by sharing with them international best practices around workload management, and how to leverage the tools they use daily. Priority worked with FCM employees to create protocols and standards, establishing shared common processes resulting in increases in efficiency and effectiveness.

Immediate Impact

The participants were better able to manage their immediate issues such as emails, prioritization, time management and help their overall productivity.

Long Term Impact

The changes implemented have had a lasting impact, so much so that WorkingSm@rt is now a part of FCM's onboarding process for new employees. By having these shared work processes, they have maintained a collaborative, cohesive and efficient work environment.

"FCM has been partnering with Priority Management on a number of initiatives for over 12 years and we have built truly wonderful relationships with every single professional that works for the organization.

The staff are responsive, flexible, customer-oriented and well-positioned to answer any number of questions that might be sent their way.   The training that they provide, coupled with the one-on-one coaching and the ability to retake any class at no additional charge has proved invaluable to FCM.

The course evaluations speak for themselves and are always rated high, both on content and on facilitation.   We would have no hesitation in recommending any training or initiative offered through Priority Management as we happily continue to rely on this valued partnership for many years to come."
